Junior Target Rifle

New Participants:

Each September, the Jamestown Junior Rifle Club holds an NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course, which is required for individuals who are interested in participating in our Junior Program. This class is held every Thursday night starting the first Thursday after Labor Day in September, through mid-November (approx.6 to 8 weeks). Per NYS Law, all interested participants must be at least 12 years of age prior to taking this course. The NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course is open to anyone 12 years of age or above who is interested in learning more about the sport of Competitive Shooting.

New participants are taught safe rifle handling and marksmanship skills in the Prone, Standing, Sitting and Kneeling positions, by an NRA Certified Rifle Instructor.

Upon successful completion of this course, Junior participants (12 to 20 years old) are welcome to participate every week as members of the Jamestown Junior Rifle Club.

Anyone interested in participating in the Thursday Class, please print out the Junior Safety Course Registration Form and bring the completed form with you to the first scheduled class. For more information, please see the attached Jamestown Junior Rifle Club Introductory Program for Newcomers, or contact one of the Jamestown Junior Rifle Club Coaches.

Our Junior Club Program:

While new participants are learning the required course, those Juniors who have successfully completed the course will be going through 10 weeks of Practice.

During the indoor season (September-March), the Juniors shoot one target in each of the four positions (Prone, Standing, Sitting, and Kneeling) at 50 feet, on a weekly basis. Our indoor range has 8 firing points. At least one Coach will be monitoring the Juniors while on the firing line at all times.

All equipment is provided by the club if the shooter does not own any (including rifles and ammunition). We charge $7 a week to cover for the cost of using the club and the equipment.

Starting mid-November, and continuing through March, new and returning Juniors will shoot together Thursday evenings to begin the “Trophy Shoot”. The Trophy Shoot is a 16-week indoor competition, where each week Juniors compete for club awards. During this time they are also qualifying for NRA Marksmanship Awards.

Also, the junior club annually hosts several indoor competitions, such as the USA Shooting Junior Olympics, NRA Junior Sectionals, and the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association (NYSRPA) Junior State Postal Matches.  These scores are sent in to the appropriate sanctioning body, as are the scores from other juniors around the state/nation.  These are statewide/national postal matches as we compete against juniors from not only within New York, but also around the country!

Upon completion of the indoor season, a banquet is held in honor of all the Junior participants, and NRA & Club awards are presented.

Starting the Thursday after the Junior Banquet, the Juniors can move to the outdoor 50 yard range, to further their shooting skills with the start of our Outdoor Season, which lasts until mid-July. During this time, we hold several outdoor competitions, such as the NYSRPA 3 Position and Prone State Championships, and the NRA 3 Position and Prone Regional Championships, which help the Juniors prepare for participation with the NYSRPA Junior Smallbore Rifle Team at the NRA Smallbore Rifle 3 Position and Prone National Matches held annually at Camp Perry, Ohio, if they so desire.

Anyone, age 12-20, who would like to join the Junior club or receive more information, please contact one of the coaches. (Please include your interest in the Jamestown Junior Club Program in the subject line of your email).
